Safety Reigns Supreme: Rosendin Electric is King

Hi, welcome to Electric TV.net. I’m your host, Tom Green.

In today’s hyper-competitive construction industry, every little thing matters. Bids are so close, job requirements so tight, that lots of companies are virtually indistinguishable from each other.

But that’s not the case with the NECA-IBEW team, because there are some things that they are unwilling to compromise on – quality, workmanship, and above all, safety.

NECA contractor Rosendin Electric knows a thing or two about safe work practices – and the industry has taken notice. They received the prestigious Construction Industry Safety Excellence award for 2011 from the Construction Users Round Table.

Let’s go to San Jose, where Rosendin shares with us their secret.

In the world of union construction, it’s our job to make sure that some things stand out. A vest. Glasses. A helmet. A meeting. A card.

Larry Hollis, VP Marketing, Rosendin Electric

“Our customers know that Rosendin is a very safe contractor. They’ve worked with us, they see our numbers. Most projects require pre-qualifications and proposals, so they get all the numbers from all the different electrical contractors in our case, and see the numbers themselves.”

Those numbers – mod rates, safe man hours, budgets – all stem from the programs Rosendin has in place to make sure that safety isn’t just an afterthought or another issue to be addressed – it’s job one.

Meetings are of vital importance. At Rosendin, every employee knows what is expected of he or she at all times. This can seem like a little thing, but it ends up being huge when taking safety into consideration.

“By allowing our employees to be a part of that planning process, the pre-task planning process, than they’re allowed to be a part of that success. By planning our work and working our plan, and working safely.”

Rosendin’s TAP program, standing for Training, Attitude and Planning, makes sure that workers have the tools necessary to do their job right and places the responsibility for every job on every man and woman there.

Each worker benefits from the “right to ask” program – and if they feel like they’re in an unsafe situation, each employee is given a “stop work” card, that allows them to stop activity on any job when there is a perceived danger.

Finally, they know that only through an I-3 program – that’s injury, incident and impact-free – can they truly send a message to customers and employees that Rosendin takes safety seriously.

And despite their tremendous growth, safety remains the paramount issue for Rosendin.

“The company has expanded tremendously in the last couple years. And so we have several regional safety managers working throughout the United States now.”

“We take safety as one of our values within the company because we look at one of the greatest assets we have in the company is our employees.”

Robert Tangonan, prefab manager, Rosendin Electric, IBEW Local 332

“We try to work everything in safe manner, and just try to make sure every can go home to their family at the end of the night.”

Marty Rouse, VP, Safety, Rosendin Electric

“We work safe because it’s simply the right thing to do. And we look at it as there’s no separation between working safe, working productively and working high quality. They should all be at the same level.”

In addition to these programs, Rosendin thinks of themselves as leaders in construction safety. Other programs they have pioneered include Pre-Task Plan cards, a mentoring program and a Knife-Free initiative.

Thanks for being with us on this edition of Electric TV. We appreciate you stopping by.
