Olivenhein-Lake Hodges Pump Station
City Managers and Municipalities are constantly searching for ways to pump up their revenues - especially in this economy.
The San Diego County Water Authority certainly was, and this video story demonstrates how NECA contractor Southern Contracting and IBEW Local 569 created a way for them to do exactly that - PUMP UP their bottom-line.
This ingenious design build project takes advantage of a "gravity well", which is a 770-foot change of elevation, between the Olivenhein Reservoir and Lake Hodges below. Water flows downhill through the gravity well's turbine during the day generating 40 mega-watts of electricity and then is pumped back uphill at night. Because electricity costs more during the day than at night - this process creates a surplus of generated electricity at .10¢ per kilo-watt hour.
Money is money and over time, it adds up, thanks to the NECA-IBEW team.
