It's a great message. If the IBEW (and NECA) can re-instill the pride in craftsmanship into the membership and/or filter out those who will not do right, then productivity will get better. The non-union will never have anything like this. We are taking advantage of one of our strengths in organized labor. In Austin, there are consequences for poor action that, eventually, will result in lost work opportunities for those who do not commit to the Code of Excellence. Absenteeism is down by 70%+ and other infractions are very rare. The NECA Chapter and the Local have monthly meetings to discuss all terminations that fall under COE. After a 3 year period, it is rare for us to even have a meeting. People are simply not getting fired.
Contractors need to pay attention as well. If materials are not getting to the job and people are standing around, it is costing you money...which affects everyone that depends on you to make a living. As an industry we are stretched so thin that everyone needs to do their part if we want to become relevant again.

I am proud to say that A.F. Smith Electric Inc. emphatically enforces the COE. It is also enthusiastically accepted by their employees. We recognize that to A.F Smith, customer satisfaction is more important than a rapid project completion to ensure a large profit margin. We embrace the importance of continous education and improvement in our skills. The combined efforts and mutual support of both the company and their employees build a respected and ever growing Electrical Contractor and establishes a large and ever growing, new and returning customer base.
